A Cullet Melter Built for the Working Hot Shop

If you're a glassblower running a small hot shop, the Jen-Ken Double Wall Crucible Kiln gives you the working temperatures you need to melt cullet and gather glass without the expense and complexity of a full furnace setup. It heats up to 2300°F to melt the cullet, drops to 1800°F to squeeze the glass, and holds at 2050°F to 2100°F for gathers. Between sessions, hold it at 1800°F and ramp back up to working temp when you're ready to blow again.

It's a smart workflow for small studios, mobile glass artists, and anyone who wants to blow glass without committing to a full day furnace running 24/7. You melt what you need, when you need it, and hold the temperature between sessions.

The double wall construction is what makes this work. It keeps exterior temperatures more manageable than a single wall kiln at the same interior heat, and the 19" x 19" x 20" deep chamber with 2.9 cubic feet of capacity is sized for crucibles that hold a real working amount of glass.

Plugs into a standard NEMA 6-50 240V outlet at 36 amps, 8,640 watts, so you don't need industrial three phase power. Max temperature is 2300°F, max working temperature is 2150°F.

Important: cullet only, not for making batch glass

This kiln is designed to melt cullet (pre-made glass). Making glass from raw batch materials releases caustic fumes that crystalize and quickly deteriorate the thermocouple and kiln brick. If you need to make batch glass, you'll need a dedicated furnace. Give us a call and we can point you in the right direction.

Coils are a wear item, not warranted

Coils in crucible kilns typically last 3 to 6 months of regular working use because of the high sustained temperatures. They're considered a consumable and aren't covered under warranty. Plan for periodic replacement as part of your operating costs.

Who Is This Kiln For?

The Double Wall Crucible Kiln is built for a specific kind of glass artist. Here's how to tell if that's you.

✓ Small hot shop owners and independent glassblowers

A cullet melter at this size gives you working glass without the cost, fuel, and complexity of running a full furnace. Perfect if you're blowing solo or with a small team.

✓ Artists working in session based studios

If you blow a few days a week instead of running production every day, the hold at 1800°F lets you keep glass ready without burning fuel around the clock.

✓ Studios without three phase power

Runs on a standard 240V single phase NEMA 6-50 outlet, so you don't need to call an electrician about a three phase service upgrade.

✓ Teaching studios and educational programs

Great way to introduce students to glassblowing without committing to the infrastructure of a full furnace. Lower operating costs make it easier to run regular classes.

  • 2300°F max temperature, 2150°F max working temperature, with full workflow from melting to gathering to holding
  • Double wall construction for better insulation and more manageable exterior temperatures
  • 19" W x 19" L x 20" D chamber with 2.9 cubic feet of capacity, sized for working crucibles
  • Multi stage workflow: 2300°F melt, 1800°F squeeze, 2050°F to 2100°F gather, 1800°F hold
  • 240V / 36 amp single phase NEMA 6-50 plug, 8,640 watts, no three phase service required
  • Orton AutoFire 3 Key controller standard, upgradeable at checkout to AutoFire 12 Key or TAP Smart

The Double Wall Crucible ships standard with the Orton AutoFire 3 Key controller. If you want more programming flexibility for your melt and hold schedules, upgrade at checkout to the AutoFire 12 Key or the TAP Smart Controller with Wi Fi. For a kiln that holds at temperature for hours between sessions, the TAP's larger memory and remote control can be a real workflow improvement.
