How is casting different from fusing?
Fusing joins glass on a flat shelf at a single peak. Casting melts frit or billet down into a mold to form a three-dimensional shape, which needs sustained hold temperatures and much longer, carefully controlled annealing — thick castings build up internal stress and will crack if cooled too fast. That's why casting kilns emphasize chamber depth and controller flexibility.
Why does chamber depth matter for casting?
Casting molds and billet reservoirs are tall, so you need vertical clearance the way fusing rarely does. Deep-chamber kilns (like Jen-Ken's 15"-deep models) give room for the mold, a reservoir above it, and even heat around the whole setup.
How long do casting anneals take?
It depends on the thickness of the piece — thick castings can anneal over many hours or even days, with a slow controlled cool-down to relieve stress. A kiln with a robust multi-segment controller lets you program the full schedule. Follow your glass and annealing references for your specific thickness.
Can a casting kiln also fuse and slump?
