What can a gas kiln do that an electric kiln can't?
The big one is reduction. By controlling the air-to-fuel ratio, gas kilns create reduction atmospheres that produce glaze results — celadons, shinos, copper reds — that electric oxidation firing can't reproduce. Gas kilns also handle salt and soda firing and raku cycles.
Updraft or downdraft — what's the difference?
In an updraft kiln, heat rises and exits the top; these are simpler and common for raku and smaller studios. In a downdraft kiln, heat is pulled down and out through a flue, which generally gives more even temperature distribution across the chamber — a reason it's favored for larger production firing.
Natural gas or propane?
