Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run an electric kiln on a normal outlet?
Smaller kilns — many rated around 120V / 15–20A — plug into a standard household outlet, though it's best to give the kiln its own circuit. Mid-size and production kilns need a 240V dedicated circuit. Always check the model's amperage and breaker requirements; our Electrical & Power guide explains how to size it.
Electric or gas?
Electric is cleaner, simpler to install, and gives very consistent oxidation firing — ideal for most studios and required where gas isn't practical. Gas adds true reduction atmospheres for certain glaze effects. If you don't specifically need reduction, electric is usually the easier choice. See our Gas Kilns if you do.
What cone can electric kilns reach?
It depends on the model. Many ceramic electric kilns fire to cone 10 (about 2350°F); glass and specialty kilns top out lower because they don't need ceramic temperatures. Match the kiln's rating to your highest target cone with a little headroom.
Do electric kilns need venting?
Firing releases fumes, so good room ventilation is important and a downdraft kiln vent is strongly recommended for indoor use — it improves air quality and can help even out firings. See our Kiln Vents and Installation & Safety guide.
