Frequently Asked Questions

What cone do I need for my work?
Earthenware and most low-fire glazes fire around cone 04–06. Mid-fire stoneware is typically cone 5–6. High-fire stoneware and porcelain need cone 8–10. Pick a kiln rated at or above your highest target cone — firing a kiln near its maximum every time shortens element life, so a little headroom helps. See our Buying Guides if you're unsure.
Do I need 240V or will 120V work?
Smaller test and home-studio kilns often run on a standard 120V household outlet. Most mid-size and production ceramic kilns require a 240V dedicated circuit. Always check the specific model's amperage and breaker requirements — our Electrical & Power guide walks through it.
What's the difference between thin-brick and 3" brick kilns?
3" firebrick holds heat better, fires more evenly on long high-fire cycles, and generally extends element life — a good fit for frequent or high-fire use. Thinner brick costs less and heats faster, which suits lower-fire or lighter-use studios.
How long do ceramic kilns take to ship?
