Real Cone 10 Power, Real Production Capacity, Real Longevity
This is the top of the Mega Coil line. The Jen-Ken AF 2829 3" Mega Coil is the kiln we recommend when a serious working potter or production studio needs three things at once: reliable cone 10 firing, real capacity for full loads, and a kiln that's going to last decades. It pulls 55 amps at 13,200 watts, which is significantly more power than most kilns at this size, and that extra muscle is what lets it cleanly handle cone 10 stoneware and porcelain firings at full chamber loads.
Inside, you've got a 28" wide by 29" deep chamber with 8.11 cubic feet of capacity. Plenty of room for full dinnerware sets, large vessels, sculptural work, or a packed shelf of student pieces. All in one firing.
What separates this from a standard kiln of similar size is what's inside. Jen-Ken built it on their 3" firebrick base and dropped in 6 oversized super heavy gauge Mega Coils, one per full brick. More element material means more life. Mega Coil kilns typically last 10 to 15 years longer than similarly sized kilns on the market. And when the day eventually comes that you do need to replace a coil, the color coded wiring uncouples in seconds and you can swap it yourself in about 10 minutes. No waiting for a repair tech.
Heads up: 55 amp electrical
This kiln needs a 55 amp 240V circuit, which is more than a standard NEMA 6-50 outlet (rated to 50 amps continuous). Most studios will need their electrician to run a dedicated 55 amp line. If you're not sure what your panel can support, give us a call and we'll help you figure it out before you order.
Included with every order
A lid lifter to take the weight out of opening the deep kiln, a heavy duty stand sized for this model, the wall hanging digital Orton controller, the full operator manual, a 2 year limited warranty through Jen-Ken, and free freight shipping to the US Lower 48.
Who Is This Kiln For?
The AF 2829 3" Mega Coil is built for a specific kind of studio. Here's how to tell if that's you.
✓ Cone 10 production potters
If you fire stoneware or porcelain at cone 10 and need a kiln that can reach those temperatures reliably and repeatedly, the 55 amp draw is what makes it possible.
✓ Busy production studios firing weekly
8.11 cu ft means full loads in one firing. The Mega Coil technology means fewer element replacements over the years. Less downtime, more output, longer kiln life.
✓ University ceramic programs and serious schools
A program firing daily needs a kiln that can take it. The Mega Coil construction and self serviceable elements mean less classroom downtime and lower long term cost of ownership.
✓ Potters investing in their "forever" kiln
If you're buying the kiln you plan to keep for the rest of your career, the Mega Coil tech is the most maintainable design in the catalog. Built to outlast just about everything else.
The AF 2829 3" Mega Coil ships with the wall hanging digital Orton AutoFire 12 Key standard. This controller mounts on the wall away from the kiln heat, keeping its components cool and extending its life. It comes loaded with full cone fire schedules in slow, medium, and fast, plus 9 user programs for custom firings, and a 60 amp mercury relay built in. It also tracks the cost of each firing, the time it took, and the temperature you achieved, useful data if you're watching margins. Upgrade options include the AutoFire Slide touchscreen and the TAP Smart Controller with Wi Fi.
