14 Cubic Feet, Cone 10, Built for Real Production
When you need real production capacity AND full high-fire capability, you need a real production kiln. The Jen-Ken AF Oval 27" is built for studios firing serious volume in stoneware, porcelain, and everything in between. 14 cubic feet of usable chamber, an oval footprint that fits more pieces per shelf than a comparable round kiln, and a hand-selected 2300°F refractory brick body that holds heat efficiently load after load.
The oval shape is the key. The same 24" x 39" footprint that gives you 14 cubic feet would only deliver about 10 cubic feet in a round configuration. If you're firing large platters, long sculptural work, dinnerware sets, or just want to maximize what you can put through the kiln in a single firing, the oval geometry pays for itself.
It fires up to cone 10 with a slow firing schedule and a hold at top temperature, covering everything from low-fire bisque through full stoneware and porcelain. The 3" brick gives you about 20% more insulation than standard 2.5" brick, which means lower energy costs per firing and better temperature stability through long cone 10 cycles. This kiln is direct wired (no plug) at 240V / 55 amps, 13,200 watts, so plan on a dedicated circuit and a qualified electrician for installation.
Cone 10 with slow fire and hold
This kiln reaches cone 10 when fired slowly and held at top temperature, which saves valuable element life compared to fast-firing to cone 10 every time. For cone 6 mid-fire work, standard schedules work fine. If most of your work is at cone 10, consider adding the SSR upgrade to protect element life over the long haul.
Direct wired, not plug-in
This kiln is hardwired to your electrical system rather than plugging into an outlet. You'll need a dedicated 240V / 55 amp circuit and a qualified electrician to do the install. Give us a call before ordering if you're not sure your studio is wired for it, and we'll walk you through what you need.
Who Is This Kiln For?
The AF Oval 27" is built for a specific kind of ceramic studio. Here's how to tell if that's you.
✓ Production potters firing stoneware and porcelain
Cone 10 capability plus 14 cubic feet of capacity means full high-fire production in one machine. Fewer firings per month, lower energy cost per piece, and more time at the wheel instead of waiting on a small kiln to cycle.
✓ Teaching studios and community art centers
Big classes mean a lot of student work waiting on bisque and glaze firings. A 14 cubic foot oval handles a whole class's output in a single firing, which makes scheduling and turnaround dramatically easier. Cone 10 capability means the kiln can handle whatever clay body your curriculum uses.
✓ Sculptural and large-format ceramicists
The 39" oval length is what makes this kiln special. Long platters, garden sculpture, architectural tile, sectional vessels — pieces that just won't fit in a round chamber slide right into an oval.
✓ Studios scaling up from a smaller round kiln
If you've outgrown a 7 to 10 cubic foot round kiln and you're firing it constantly, this is the natural step up. The oval format adds capacity without proportionally adding footprint or operating complexity.
Included with every order
A heavy duty stand sized for this kiln, the full operator manual, lid lifters (standard on this model, a real quality-of-life feature on a production kiln), the Orton AutoFire 12-Key controller with all cone firing schedules built in plus 9 user programs, a 2 year limited warranty through Jen-Ken on the kiln and controller, and free freight shipping to the US Lower 48.
You'll pick your digital controller at checkout. The standard Orton AutoFire 12-Key has every cone program built in and supports 9 custom firing schedules, with P-I-D control algorithms to eliminate temperature cycling on long firings — particularly valuable for cone 10 schedules where consistent ramp rates matter. The AutoFire Slide upgrades to a touchscreen interface and stores 35 separate firing schedules with 20 user-defined ramp and hold steps, which is useful when you're running multiple cone schedules across different clay bodies. The TAP Smart Controller with Wi-Fi is the top of the line, letting you start, monitor, and adjust firings from your phone, tablet, or computer with virtually unlimited program storage — a real workflow upgrade for a production studio.
Recommended Add-Ons
Solid State Relay (SSR) Upgrade
Hands down the best investment you can make on a kiln this size, and especially important if you're firing to cone 10 regularly. The SSR replaces the standard mechanical relay, giving you faster power cycling, tighter temperature control, longer element life, and lower electrical costs. On a 13,200 watt kiln firing high-fire schedules, the energy savings and element life extension add up fast.
Furniture Kit
Includes eight 26" half shelves, an assortment of 1", 2", 4", and 6" posts, and a 1 lb. tub of shelf primer. Sized specifically for this kiln. Order it with the kiln — adding it separately later costs 10-20% more and incurs separate freight. Shelves may have minor surface imperfections.
Orton Vent Master Downdraft Vent System
Essentially required on a kiln this size. Pulls fumes out through a duct or window, which is safer for you and better for the kiln. Improves airflow and temperature uniformity, helps glaze colors develop accurately, and significantly extends element life. Most customers tell us the vent pays for itself in element longevity alone.
Stand with Caster Wheels
A 425 lb kiln is not something you want to muscle around your studio on a stationary stand. Caster wheels make moving it for cleaning, maintenance, or layout changes a one-person job. Detach any vent system before moving.
Power Interrupt Switch / Automatic Lid Shutoff
Cuts power to the heating elements when the lid is opened and restores it when closed. Highly recommended if you'll be peeking, raking, or opening the kiln during firing.
