A 24" Glass Kiln That Still Runs on a Dryer Outlet
The middle ground in your glass kiln decision is usually a tradeoff. Step up from a home-size 18" kiln and you typically jump to a 50 amp circuit, an electrician visit, and a kiln that's overkill for what you actually make. The Jen-Ken AF3P 24-E is the kiln that fixes that. 24" wide chamber, room for a 20" bowl or table top, but still runs on a NEMA 6-30 dryer-style outlet at 26 amps — the same plug as the smaller 18-E.
That's a real deal. You get nearly twice the capacity of the 18-E (2.87 cubic feet vs 1.61) in a kiln that doesn't require you to upgrade your electrical. If your home or studio already has a 240V dryer-style outlet, you're plug-and-play.
Top and side firing handles the actual glasswork. The top elements deliver radiant heat straight down onto the glass for clean fusing and slumping, while the side coils bring the chamber up to temperature evenly so you don't get cold spots on larger pieces. Max temperature is 1700°F, which covers full fuse, tack fuse, slumping, draping, and annealing.
Plugs into the same outlet as the 18-E
This kiln runs on a 240V / 26 amp NEMA 6-30 outlet — the same dryer-style outlet many electric dryers and welders use. If you have one already, you're plug-and-play. Most homes have one in a garage, basement, or laundry area, and adding one is a few hours of an electrician's time. Give us a call if you're not sure what you have.
Who Is This Kiln For?
The 24-E is built for a specific kind of glass artist. Here's how to tell if that's you.
✓ Glass artists who outgrew an 18" kiln but don't need 28"
If you keep running out of shelf space on a smaller kiln but you're not making 26" platters, this is the sweet spot. 20" bowls and table tops fit comfortably, and you can lay out multiple smaller pieces in a single firing.
✓ Home studios with dryer-style outlets already in place
If your studio is in a garage or basement with an existing 240V dryer outlet, this kiln plugs right in. You get larger-kiln capacity without the larger-kiln electrical project.
✓ Glass artists doing platters, large bowls, and dinnerware
20" of usable shelf is plenty for serving platters, large bowl slumps, charger plates, and full dinnerware sets. The chamber dimensions match the kind of work most intermediate glass artists are actually making.
✓ Small production studios scaling up without scaling out
If you're selling work at craft fairs, online, or at small galleries and need more capacity per firing, the 24-E lets you scale your output without taking on the footprint, electrical, and operating cost of a true production kiln.
Included with every order
A heavy duty stand sized for this kiln, the full operator manual, the Orton AF3P 3-button controller standard (upgrades available), a 2 year limited warranty through Jen-Ken on the kiln and controller, and free freight shipping to the US Lower 48.
You'll pick your digital controller at checkout. The standard Orton AF3P AutoFire Express 3-Key stores up to 6 eight-step custom programs and handles most fusing and slumping work without fuss. The Orton AutoFire 12-Key adds 4 fully custom programs and a fuller keypad for more flexibility with your schedules. The AutoFire Slide upgrades to a touchscreen interface and stores 35 separate firing schedules with 20 user-defined ramp and hold steps. The TAP Smart Controller with Wi-Fi is the top of the line, letting you start, monitor, and adjust firings from your phone or tablet with virtually unlimited program storage — a nice luxury for the longer slumping schedules you'll run in a kiln this size.
Recommended Add-Ons
Solid State Relay (SSR) Upgrade
Hands down the best investment you can make. The SSR replaces the standard mechanical relay, giving you faster power cycling, tighter temperature control, longer element life, and lower electrical costs. Especially valuable for glass work, where small temperature swings at the wrong moment can affect your fuse.
Furniture Kit
Includes one 21" round shelf, an assortment of shelf posts, and kiln wash. Sized for both 24-E models. Order it with the kiln to save on freight. Note: shelves may have minor surface imperfections like scratches, discoloration, or rough edges.
Orton Vent Master Downdraft Vent System
Vents fumes outside through a duct or window, which is safer for you and better for the kiln. Improves airflow and temperature uniformity, helps colors develop accurately, and extends element life. Worth it for any home studio, especially one in an attached garage or basement.
Stand with Caster Wheels
The standard stand is stationary. At 150 lbs, this kiln is heavy enough that adding caster wheels makes moving it a one-person job instead of a two-person ordeal. Detach any vent system before moving.
Power Interrupt Switch / Automatic Lid Shutoff
Cuts power to the heating elements when the lid is opened and restores it when closed. Recommended if you'll be peeking or opening the kiln during firing, and a nice safety feature in any household with kids or pets nearby.
