Kiln Ventilation Options
Proper kiln ventilation is essential for two reasons. It protects your health by removing harmful byproducts, and it can improve firing consistency by keeping the kiln atmosphere stable.
Downdraft Ventilation The Industry Standard
A downdraft vent is an active system that pulls a small amount of air through the kiln and exhausts it outside. Common examples include Skutt EnviroVent 2 and L and L Vent Sure.
How It Works
The system creates slight negative pressure inside the kiln. It draws fumes and moisture out before they can leak into your studio, then vents them outside through flexible ducting.
Pros
- Firing quality: Pulling fresh air through the kiln can support more consistent glaze results and even heat top to bottom.
- Equipment protection: Removes corrosive fumes that shorten the life of elements and thermocouples.
- Easier install: Often uses dryer style flexible ducting and can vent through a wall or window.
Overhead Canopy Hoods
A canopy hood is a metal hood mounted above the kiln. It captures heat and fumes as they rise and exhausts them outside using a high powered fan.
How It Works
It relies on natural convection, heat rises, the hood captures it, and an exhaust fan pulls the air out of the building.
Pros and Cons
- Heat removal: Excellent at removing ambient heat so the studio stays more comfortable.
- Universal fit: A single hood can sometimes serve more than one small kiln.
- Code requirements: Must extend well beyond the kiln opening to capture fumes when the lid is opened while hot.
- No firing benefit: Does not change the atmosphere inside the kiln. It only manages air outside the kiln.
Why Ventilation Is Not Optional
Firing ceramics and glaze materials can release byproducts that are hazardous to breathe. Proper ventilation helps reduce exposure.
- Carbon monoxide: Produced as organic materials burn off during firing.
- Sulfur dioxide: Can cause respiratory irritation and is released from many clay bodies.
- Metal fumes: Some glazes can release toxic vapors, especially materials containing lead, copper, or manganese.
